NYC Restaurant Week Summer 2014: Burke and Wills
It’s one of my favorite times of year: restaurant week. Restaurant week gives people the chance to eat at the city’s best restaurants at a reasonable price, which is perfect for this girl on a budget. The first restaurant on my list this season is Burke and Wills on the Upper West Side. Located on 79th Street and Broadway, Burke and Wills is a cute little bistro offering Australian cuisine. There they ensure the quality and freshness of the food by presenting a menu based on seasonal ingredients.
Our reservation was at 5:30 and as we were early we took advantage of the happy hour at the bar. Thinking along the lines of when in Rome, I ordered Fosters saying “isn’t that what they drink in Australia?” The bartender, who also happens to be the owner chuckled and shook his head and offered me a Cooper’s Original Pale Ale on tap. It was so light and refreshing and Burke & Wills is the only place you can get it on tap.
When our reservation time arrived, we were seated in a pretty little dining room, which would be great for holding special events. The dining room was artfully decorated with a skylight that adds to the sophisticated and romantic feel of the room.
To start I ordered the grilled octopus, which was so amazingly tender and served with smoked mussels, frisée, cannellini beans, and white gazpacho. For my main course I ordered the kangaroo burger of course, medium rare, which is the only way to order a burger. The ‘roo burger was served with a tomato jam, which added just the right amount of heat. The burger came with a side of triple fried chips, or fries as we Americans call them, which made them the right amount of crispy.
Overall I would highly recommend taking advantage of Restaurant Week and trying Burke and Wills. I definitely plan on going back, restaurant week or not.
